Creative Director Melanie Cloutier shares some quick tips on how to
use your paper scraps and leftover pieces of ribbon or fiber to make
cards.
If you are like me you have probably been making your own greeting
cards for a while. Within the years that I have made my own cards I
discovered that they are a great way to use up your scraps of paper,
your end of ribbon or fiber, leftover stickers, buttons and eyelets.
I thought I would share some of the techniques I use with those
leftover supplies.
Who says that all your Christmas cards need to be identical? Bring out
all those scraps of cardstock! Most people will stick to red and green
for their cards and do them all with half of an 8 ½ x 11 sheet of
cardstock. I found that blue cardstock makes really nice cards when
paired with a snowflake sticker, die-cut or stamp. Add a little glitter
and voila! Black and gold or silver is very classy too. Or what about
neutrals like beige or brown paired up with a mitten sticker or die-cut?
To use up smaller pieces of ribbon or fiber - depending on the length -
you can wrap it around the fold of the card and tie it on the outside.
You can also affix two eyelets on the front of the card and thread the
ribbon or the fiber through it, tape it inside the card and use a scrap
of patterned paper to line the inside of the card so the back of the
eyelet isn’t visible. You can stamp an image on a small tag and tie a
ribbon or a piece of fiber to it before securing it to the card with a pop
dot.
Cards are a great way to use up leftover letter stickers too. “M”
can be used for the first letter in Merry Christmas, or “H” for
Happy...you get the idea. Almost any sticker can be used as the front picture
of a card. Mat the sticker put it on a pop dot and there you go!
What if you have one eyelet or one button left of a set? You can stamp a simple
flower like the one from the Scraptivity™ July kit and affix a button or
eyelet to the middle of the flower. Seed beads can be placed over eyes on a
sticker. Those are only a few suggestions.
Now go ahead and open up those drawers full of scrap paper and cardstock, bring
out those bits and pieces of ribbon and fiber along with those lonely one-of-a-kind
embellishments stashed in your crop room and create the most unique cards ever!
